STATE TREASURERS CALL ON CONGRESS TO PASS AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN

Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck: “It is critical that DC pass another round of relief. But this time, with flexible direct aid.”

Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Rogers: “We have spent our CARES money very carefully — but we spent it. There isn’t money sitting there idle. There’s much, much more work that needs to be done.”

Iowa State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald: “We’re suffering every day. We need this help from the federal government, and then we can start working on things that would really help our state grow.”

Oregon State Treasurer Tobias Read: Oregon is “going to require federal help with PPE, with testing, and with making sure that the schools can continue to operate safely once they are open.”

Without Additional Aid, State Governments Face Budget Shortfalls That Could Exceed $500 Billion Over The Next Two Years

WASHINGTON, D.C. — State treasurers across the country are urging Congress to deliver $350 billion in aid for state and local governments to keep essential workers on the job, support vaccination efforts, and safely reopen schools.

State Treasurers Michael Fitzgerald (IA), Lynn Rogers (KS), Henry Beck (ME), and Tobias Read (OR) made the following statements on a press call hosted by Invest in America Action:

“I want to speak directly and respectfully to one of our Senators, Senator Susan Collins,” said Maine State Treasurer Henry Beck. “In her reelection campaign just a few months ago, she said that she was hopeful that there would be included a provision for state and local aid. We have to move beyond being hopeful. It is critical that DC pass another round of relief but this time with flexible direct aid.”

“We need the help to help our citizens get vaccinated,” said Iowa State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald. “We’re 46th in the country in distributing vaccines right here in the heartland. There’s no excuse for that — we’re suffering every day. We need this help from the federal government, and then we can start working on things that would really help our state grow.”

“We have spent our CARES money very carefully — but we spent it. There isn’t money sitting there idle,” said Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Rogers. “Topeka has already laid off people because of Covid. If they have to go through another round, they’re really getting into the muscle, not the fat. It’ll mean fewer employees servicing the needs of the city, which then can be multiplied for other cities and other municipalities.”

“We haven’t had the focus on what it’s going to take to safely reopen schools,” said Oregon State Treasurer Tobias Read. “We’re increasingly aware of that need, and increasingly aware of what it’s going to take to do it safely. That’s going to require federal help with PPE, with testing, and with making sure that the schools can continue to operate safely once they are open.”

17 state treasurers signed a letter urging their Congressional delegations to support the American Rescue Plan, which includes $350 billion in crucial state and local aid. After a year of depleted revenues, state and local governments have had to lay off 1.4 million workers and are struggling to keep up with the demand for vaccinations without adequate funding. Facing a potential budget shortfall that could exceed $500 billion over the next two years, states are in dire need of additional funding from Congress.
