SPEND YOUR McCONNELL MONEY: NEW MICROSITE SHOWS HOW FAR DECEMBER’S STIMULUS CHECK GOES (SPOILER ALERT: NOT VERY)

New Microsite from Invest in America Action Lets You Spend The  Stimulus Check Passed Last December On Lavish Expenses Like…Half a Month’s Rent

Site Highlights The Urgent Need For A Big, Bold Stimulus Package That Gives Real Relief To Families — Direct Checks, Expanded Unemployment Insurance, Aid to Keep Essential Workers on the Job, Public Health Investments to Rapidly Distribute the Vaccine

77% of Voters Want Another Stimulus Package And 68% of These Voters Want It Larger Than The $900 Billion December Package, New Polling from GQR Shows

WASHINGTON, DC — Senate Republicans say they won’t support President Biden’s covid relief plan because they think they’ve already done enough to help everyday Americans get by in the worst economy since World War II.

They should check out “Spend Your McConnell Money,” a new microsite from Invest in America Action that shows just how far the $600 direct checks they passed in December’s stimulus package can stretch (or not) for a struggling family. Visit the site here.

With a $600 check, a typical American family can do extravagant things like:

“With the poverty rate back on the rise, businesses shuttered, and millions unemployed, Americans need a lifeline — and the $600 wasn’t nearly enough,” said Zac Petkanas, senior advisor to Invest in America Action. “We need a big, bold stimulus package that not only includes direct checks — but also builds public health infrastructure to boost vaccine distribution, expands unemployment insurance, provides aid to keep essential workers on the job, keeps renters and homeowners with a roof over their heads and helps keep small businesses open.”

A screenshot from the site is below:

Robust stimulus checks are a crucial lifeline for Americans and a key part of covid relief.

  • The first round of checks prevented people from falling into poverty and even helped drop the poverty rate by more than two points in April and May, when the pandemic was raging.

  • Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell credited the stimulus checks and additional unemployment insurance with a rebound in household spending.

  • Support for direct checks continues to climb — at the end of March, 58% of voters supported stimulus checks. Now, 78% of likely voters support a $2,000 stimulus check.

President Biden’s robust plan provides for another round of direct stimulus checks, an expansion of unemployment insurance, and much-needed help to keep essential workers on the job, assistance for renters, homeowners and small businesses, among other key provisions.

These provisions would also help rescue and grow the economy.

  • Expanding unemployment insurance now would support more than 5 million jobs, and boost the GDP by 3.7%, according to the Economic Policy Institute.

  • Every dollar spent on unemployment insurance generates a $1.64 increase in GDP.

  • Every dollar invested in state and local aid generates $1.36 in GDP growth

Recent polling from GQR demonstrates the strong support from voters across the political spectrum for urgent and expansive public investment. More than half of voters said that the previous stimulus packages weren’t enough, and 77% say the government should pass another.
