SENATE GOP THREATENS TO DELAY TACTICS ON COVID RELIEF AS MARCH 14 UNEMPLOYMENT DEADLINE APPROACHES
Senators Ron Johnson, Rand Paul Threaten Procedural Tricks To Delay Passage…
…Days Before More Than 11 Million Workers Will Begin to Lose Unemployment Benefits Starting on March 14
WASHINGTON, DC — With just over 10 days until America’s unemployed workers are pushed over a cliff, Senate Republicans are throwing up last minute procedural hurdles in a last ditch effort to to sabotage the overwhelmingly popular American Rescue Plan, which would deliver crucial economic relief to American communities, state and local governments, schools, and small businesses.
“By stonewalling passage of the American Rescue Plan, Senate Republicans are making it clear that they would rather obstruct the new administration at all costs than fund direct $1,400 checks, school reopening, and vaccine distribution,” said Maddy McDaniel, communications director for Invest in America Action. “We are approaching 10 days until the expiration of unemployment benefits for 11.4 million Americans. While they’re on the cusp of losing their homes and jobs, Senate Republicans are focused on sabotaging and stalling a bill with a 77% approval rating by the American people. Their actions are disgraceful and the American people won’t forget those who fought to keep money out of their own constituents’ pockets.”
The expiration of unemployment insurance benefits on March 14 is just the beginning.
Thousands of struggling small businesses will need to shut their doors without additional aid — like the 400,000 firms before them;
Millions of families, who have already lost $1.3 trillion in income, will soon no longer be able to pay the rent or put food on the table without a stimulus check;
Many state and local governments, who already face a $300 billion budget shortfall, will need to lay off more essential workers, curtail their vaccine distribution programs and keep schools shut down without more funding.
