SEN. BENNET, SEN. BROWN, SEN. BOOKER, REP. DELAURO, AND MOMSRISING MEMBER DISCUSS NEED TO PASS BUILD BACK BETTER ACT TO EXTEND CHILD TAX CREDIT

Sen. Michael Bennet: “To me it is unconscionable that we would rip away this lifeline for families in the dead of winter and double the rate of child poverty in America now that we’ve seen how important it is for parents and kids.”

Sen. Sherrod Brown: “The Child Tax Credit is the most consequential thing we have done to make people’s hard work pay off in decades.”

Sen. Cory Booker: “If we fail to do the right thing, we are going to see a tremendous rug pulled out from under so many families in our nation, who right now have a bridge from being stressed to being blessed.”

Rep. Rosa DeLauro: “Families cannot afford a disruption in Child Tax Credit payments.

Torie Miesko: “The child tax credit definitely helps average Americans. Thank you to all of the lawmakers who have been fighting for it.”

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Senators Michael Bennet, Sherrod Brown, and Cory Booker, along with Representative Rosa DeLauro, Economic Security Project Action Director Adam Ruben, and MomsRising member Torie Miesko, joined a press call hosted by Invest in America Action, Economic Security Project Action, and Children’s Defense Fund to discuss the urgent need to pass the Build Back Better Act to avoid a lapse in the Child Tax Credit. A recording of the call is available here

The speakers emphasized that the expanded Child Tax Credit is a transformative policy that has, according to estimates, reduced child poverty by nearly half this year, allowed millions of parents to go to work and keep up with the cost of living, and eased the economic burden on working and middle-class families.

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Economic Security Project Action Director Adam Ruben, and MomsRising member Torie Miesko made the following statements on the press call:

“To me it is unconscionable that we would rip away this lifeline for families in the dead of winter and double the rate of child poverty in America now that we’ve seen how important it is for parents and kids in Colorado and across the country,” said Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO). “We finally have a tax credit that’s working for working people and we should do everything we can to extend it — and that’s why we’re going to do everything we can to get the Build Back Better plan over the finish line.”

“The Child Tax Credit is the most consequential thing we have done to make people’s hard work pay off in decades. We know how hard parents’ work, we know how expensive it is to raise kids, and we know workers’ wages haven’t kept up with the cost of child care and health care and housing and all the big items in families’ budgets. It’s why we passed the largest tax cut for working families, ever – and it’s why we need to get this done, pass Build Back Better, and extend the CTC expansion now,” said Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH).

“For working class families and middle-class families, at a time when prices are going up, the Child Tax Credit has been a lifeline. In New Jersey and across the country, it’s helping families meet their needs in child care and early education, meet the challenges of a tough economy, and relieve their worries,” said Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ). “If we fail to do the right thing, we are going to see a tremendous rug pulled out from under so many families in our nation, who right now have a bridge from being stressed to being blessed.”

“Today, families struggle with the high cost of living. And as we continue working to come out of the pandemic, people are struggling with their bills and taxes and need a government that looks out for the middle class, working families, small businesses, and the vulnerable who work hard,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT-03). “In the past they had a government that jumped for the one percent and biggest corporations. It is time to grow the middle class again in this country. People who live paycheck to paycheck, we are finally moving in that direction and making a shift. Families cannot afford a disruption in Child Tax Credit payments.”

“The Child Tax Credit is helping families meet their basic needs. It’s a crucial lifeline for working-class families and it’s lifting millions of kids out of poverty. It’s crucial that we extend right now, before families miss a payment. We urge the Senate to pass the Build Back Better Act before Christmas – Senators must not leave on vacation and leave families hanging,” said Adam Ruben, Director of Economic Security Project Action.

“This child tax credit has really helped me pay for car insurance, rent, food, my gas bill, and more when prices are high. I wish the child tax credit was here three years ago because it would have really helped me take care of my two kids,” said Torie Miesko, parent and MomsRising member from Swissvale, PA.  “I just want a better America for the people who put the country together. The child tax credit definitely helps average Americans. Thank you to all of the lawmakers who have been fighting for it.”
