ADY BARKAN AND WEST VIRGINIA ADVOCATES: SENATOR MANCHIN MUST SUPPORT THE BUILD BACK BETTER AGENDA NOW
In a Virtual Press Conference, Speakers Called on Manchin to Lower Health Care Costs, Increase Funding for Home-Based Community Services, and Extend the Child Tax Credit
CHARLESTON, West Virginia—Yesterday, Be A Hero founder Ady Barkan joined West Virginia advocates for a virtual press conference to demand that Senator Joe Manchin support the Build Back Better agenda and immediately deliver historic investments in Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) for elderly and disabled West Virginians, health care, and the Child Tax Credit.
Participants including health care advocate and Founder of Be A Hero Ady Barkan, West Virginia Working Families Party Executive Director Ryan Frankenberry, West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare Executive Director Dr. Jessica Ice, Prevent Child Abuse WV State Director Jim McKay, SEIU 1199 Organizing Director Sherri McKinney, SEIU 1199 Secretary and Treasurer Joyce Gibson, West Virginia mother Tracy Wood made the following statements:
“My biggest plea to Senator Manchin is the time is now. Families need [the Build Back Better agenda] immediately. It’s not something that can wait until 2022, it’s something that families needed yesterday,” said Tracy Wood, mother of a 7-year old son who relies on home and community-based services and resident of Wheeling, West Virginia.
“Full funding [for the Build Back Better agenda] will transform the lives of thousands of disabled people, seniors, and home care workers. It will create new opportunities for caregivers who were forced to leave their jobs or retire early to care for a loved one… It’s no wonder a majority of people support the program. Here in West Virginia, 77% of voters support full funding for home and community-based services, including 62% of Republicans. But to get this funding to shore, we need Joe Manchin to get on board,” said Ady Barkan, Health Care Advocate and Founder of Be A Hero.
“The [Build Back Better agenda] is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create an economy in West Virginia that gets us high-paying union jobs and gives people a living wage. But most importantly it takes care of our people. We can take care of our roads and bridges all day long but if we don’t care for our people what are the roads and bridges for?” said Ryan Frankenberry, West Virginia Working Families Party.
These programs [in the Build Back Better agenda] help folks. These programs are popular. These programs are what West Virginians need. We have the data saying that we need it, we have the public opinion saying that we want it, and we know that we can afford it. So, there is no good reason to say no,” said Dr. Jessica Ice, West Virginians for Affordable Healthcare.
“[The Build Back Better agenda] as a total package—including it’s components around child care, paid family leave, the extended Child Tax Credit—is the most significant piece of legislation to strengthen families and prevent child neglect in over a decade,” said Jim McKay, Prevent Child Abuse WV.
“We’re asking Senator Manchin, we need you. We do not need you to cut this or pull it apart. We need [the Build Back Better agenda] in its entirety so that elderly West Virginians can be taken care of daily,” said Sherri McKinney, SEIU 1199.
